Leaving the military is often framed as the end of the hard part, but for many service members the transition home is where the real struggle begins. This conversation examines why the move from military to civilian life carries such weight on mental health, and what clinicians and communities can do to recognize the risk and meet veterans where they are.

Dr. Ali Tayyeb
Ph.D., RN, NPD-BC, PHN, FADLN, FAAN
Dr. Tayyeb works where nursing meets policy, education, and advocacy, reading institutions for what their structures actually reward rather than what they claim to value. Educated at the University of San Diego, where he earned his PhD in nursing, and at California State University, Los Angeles, where he completed his MSN in nursing education and his BSN, his work is shaped by his service as a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman and by a fellowship in both the American Academy of Nursing and the Academy of Diversity Leaders in Nursing. His writing names the distance between a credential and real competency, and the translation tax paid by those who move between professional worlds, a body of work recognized with the AACN Visionary Leadership Pioneering Spirit Award and the ANA California President's Award. He writes and consults as a disrupter of structures that no longer serve the communities they were built for, grounded in mentorship, fair attribution, and the conviction that nurses deserve a professional exchange that honors what they give.
After listening to this podcast learners will:
- Describe how the military-to-civilian transition itself functions as a mental health stressor, including the loss of structure, identity, and belonging that service members navigate after separation.
- Recognize warning signs and risk factors for behavioral health crises during the transition period, including the conditions that elevate suicide risk among recently separated veterans.
- Identify how clinicians and community members can support veterans through transition, from how they ask about service to where they connect veterans with resources.
