Since primary care providers manage approximately 90% of COPD cases, it stands to reason that COPD guidelines should be tailored to a primary care perspective. This session will be a comprehensive update including a review of clinical assessment, therapeutics and case management of patients with COPD. We will review current 2023 GOLD guidelines and discuss the management of COPD. This session will include updates in current COPD research that are relevant to practical management of COPD patients in outpatient clinic using case examples.

Dr. Syeda is an Assistant Professor at Boston University School of Medicine’s Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care Section and holds a Lecturer of Medicine appointment at the Harvard Medical School. She is a practicing physician at the VA Boston in West Roxbury, MA and Bedford VA in Bedford, MA. She is on staff at Steward Norwood Hospital’s intensive care unit in Norwood, MA. She serves as a consultant to the Boston University School of Medicine, Barry M. Manuel Office of Continuing Medical Education and COPD Quality Improvement Consortium and has engaged in several collaborative COPD QI projects. She has presented on several pulmonary topics including COPD, asthma, smoking cessation and e-cigarettes/vaping at NPACE over the past three years.
Dr. Syeda received her MD in 2005 in at Rush University Medical Center and completed residency and Chief residency in Internal Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. She completed a Pulmonary & Critical Care Fellowship and conducted health services research focusing on the impact of prolonged mechanical ventilation and use of tracheostomy on chronic critical illness at Boston University. She is ABIM board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.
At the Boston VA, Dr. Syeda is engaged in various clinical, educational and administrative initiatives. She regularly teaches medical students, residents and fellows at Boston VA and is actively engaged in various hospital initiatives to improve transitional care and reduce admissions and readmissions for patients with COPD and Heart Failure. To this end, she developed and served as a medical director of a successful intensive care and case management program for veterans with advanced COPD and heart failure. More recently, she has actively been involved in treating Covid19 patients in telehealth, ambulatory and intensive care settings.
