This interactive case-based discussion reviews the role of the Acute Care NP in recognizing and managing difficult airways of critically ill and injured patients. Airway assessment tools and positioning strategies are reviewed in detail. A variety of advanced airway tools are thoroughly examined, including pros and cons of each. Additionally, medications to aide in airway management are covered to equip the Acute Care NP knowledge to safely prescribe during the stressful situations of difficult airway management.

Dawn Carpenter, DNP, ACNP-BC, CCRN, FAANP is a practicing Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the surgical/trauma intensive care unit at Guthrie Healthcare System in Sayre, Pennsylvania. Dawn’s career spans over 30 years as a critical care nurse, clinical nurse specialist, nurse practitioner and faculty. In addition, Dawn is an Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Graduate School of Nursing. She is an avid mentor of DNP students and is the previous coordinator of the adult gerontology acute care nurse practitioner program. Dawn possesses a passion for educating and mentoring acute and critical care nurses and nurse practitioners as they advance their careers. Dawn is a nationally known speaker on a variety of critical care topics, including trauma and sepsis.
Dawn has been actively engaged at the national level with the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN). She’s been an item writer, member of the exam development committee for the ACNPC-AG and CCRN exams, a subject matter expert for AACN. Additionally, she was a member and co-chair of the Advance Practice Institute (API) planning committee and member of the Nominating Committee. Most recently she has been appointed to the Board of Director of AACN.
